COMPANY OVERVIEW

Brownstone Consulting is a 100% Australian-owned, sovereign consultancy established in 2014, headquartered in Canberra with offices in Albury and Melbourne. We are a small, senior team of software engineers, data analysts, business analysts, UX designers and commercial/programme advisors, accredited under Australia’s Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) to handle sensitive and classified defence information.

Our core business is designing, building and sustaining enterprise data, analytics and assurance platforms for defence and government, alongside commercial, procurement and programme advisory across the capability lifecycle.

Our flagship platform, SMART, is trusted by the Royal Australian Navy for Fleet-wide readiness and safety decision-making. Using SMART, HMAS Adelaide was released from maintenance two weeks early for urgent tasking, contributing to a mission that saved Australian lives — exactly the fragmented-systems problem the US Army is now trying to solve at scale. We are bringing two further platforms built the same way: a coalition logistics capability, and a tender evaluation and program audit system already proven in sustained Army use.

PRODUCTS

  • SMART (Seaworthiness Management and Assurance Reporting Tool): a four-application platform — Analytics, Issues Management, Assurance, and real-time Command Dashboards — giving the Navy a single, end-to-end view of Fleet readiness, risk and safety. It unifies data from 18 sources into dashboards and readiness forecasts, runs formal safety assurance reviews with automatic sign-off, tracks every issue to closure, and puts a live risk picture in front of commanders rather than periodic reporting.

  • Coalition Logistics Capability: a live, shared view of a coalition’s logistics posture, designed to sit inside frameworks such as INDOPACOM’s Mission Network and CJADC2’s mission-partner information-sharing environment. It solves the recurring problem of multiple nations, Services and industry partners each holding a piece of the logistics picture, in different systems and security boundaries. In development, extending SMART’s architecture into this domain.

  • Tender Evaluation and Automated Program Audit and Management System: one system from bid through to contract award, then continuous oversight until final disposal. Proven and in use by the Australian Army for over three years, delivering faster evaluations, continuous monitoring and consistent, auditable decisions.

We also provide commercial, financial, procurement and sustainment advisory — cost-of-ownership analysis, ASDEFCON expertise, contract negotiation, tender and bid development, and post-award contract management — to Defence and government project teams and industry primes.

These close a common gap: large, distributed military and government organisations routinely end up with safety, readiness, logistics and financial data trapped across disconnected systems, with no single trusted, real-time picture for decision-makers.

DISCRIMINATORS

Competitors here are typically large prime integrators delivering bespoke, multi-year programs, or off-the-shelf BI tools not purpose-built for safety assurance workflows. Brownstone is faster and closer to the customer: a small, senior, security-cleared team co-designing directly with end users within Defence Protected and Secret environments, including the largest Analytics application in Defence ICT. Our USP: a proven, five-plus-year record sustaining one of Defence’s largest data and assurance platforms end-to-end, for a fraction of a large integrator’s cost, with full sovereign IP ownership retained by the customer.

AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT

Our engagement model is co-design with the end user from day one; a first working capability is typically delivered in weeks, not years. SMART is mature, in-service and continuously enhanced for over five years; the tender evaluation and program audit system is similarly mature and in sustained use; the coalition logistics capability is in active development on SMART’s architecture. Brownstone has no US entity or facility at present, and would welcome working with an established US company, integrator or agent, including teaming built around a specific capability gap.

KEY CUSTOMERS

Royal Australian Navy: SMART, in continuous use by over 2,500 personnel. Australian Department of Defence project offices ( joint, aviation, land, maritime): commercial and sustainment strategy advisory, including cost-of-ownership analysis supporting a major sustainment contract extension. Service Stream (ASX-listed infrastructure and asset lifecycle services): support securing a long-term, >$AUD10 billion, defence base services contract covering 113 sites. Australian Army: the tender evaluation and program audit system, in use for over three years from bid through continuous post-award oversight.

Key Partnerships

Brownstone builds on the Microsoft stack (Azure, Power BI, SQL Server) and works with specialist Australian ICT delivery partners to flex capacity. We are actively seeking new technology and delivery partners in the US market, particularly around managing and assuring military assets, secure cloud hosting and data integration. We have advised Defence program offices on sustainment strategy ahead of major contract extensions, and supported a major capability acquisition and an ASX-listed infrastructure company through tendering and contract implementation.

QUALITY ACCREDITATIONS AND AWARDS

DISP-accredited. Founder Emma Stuart received a Vice Chief of the Defence Force Commendation for “unprecedented speed to acquisition.” Brownstone is a registered, active supplier across multiple Australian Government and Defence procurement panels, and a long-term partner of Legacy, supporting families of deceased and incapacitated veterans.
